Self-Compassion Is a Mental Health Wonder Drug That Can Help You Stop Procrastinating, Save Money, and Be More Successful

One of the advantages of doing what I do for so many years is that patterns start to jump out at you. When you read as much about new studies and success hacks as I do, you notice when a particular finding or tip comes up again and again.

So when I read the headline “Mindfulness study: Practicing self-compassion reduces impulse buying” on PsyPost recently, my first thought was, “Huh, that’s interesting.” And my second was, “Haven’t I read about the benefits of self-compassion a few times before?”

I started rummaging through my archives and doing some googling and sure enough, I kept turning up article after article that all pointed in the same direction — something as simple as showing yourself a little compassion can have outsize impacts not just on your mental health, but on a whole host of outcomes, from beating procrastination to increasing work performance. I left this little project with the distinct impression that self-compassion might just be an undersung mental health wonder drug.
